TCG Quickly Generates Grassroots Support in Alaska
Tax on Big Oil to bring Alaskans more than $1 billion
A special session of the Alaska State Legislature came to a conclusion when lawmakers approved a widely supported tax increase on the oil industry. The Clinton Group worked to ensure the success of the legislation by implementing an impressive constituent outreach program to demonstrate overwhelming bipartisan support for the bill.
In less than 24 hours, TCG was able to begin contacting voters in 7 House and 6 Senate districts, which generated nearly 900 genuine constituent messages supporting the bill. Over a three day period, constituents were able to communicate directly to their legislator's office via TCG's direct connect service. This demonstration of grassroots support countered a well funded lobbying effort by several large oil companies who opposed the legislation.
The bill will bring over $1 billion to the state that will come in part from the record oil profits made in the past year. Several legislators noted the effect of the wide range of support for the tax and referenced its effect on the vote.
The Alaska Oil Tax Campaign demonstrated the value of TCG's in-house call center capabilities and ability to deliver targeted messages in a short time span. The company's extensive experience in legislative advocacy further helped hone message and illustrated its ability to provide salient communications that bear results.
