The Stem Cell Research and Cures Amendment

Grassroots Campaigns for Missouri Coalition of Life Saving Cures

The Challenge

In 2006, The Stem Cell Research and Cures Amendment was placed on the ballot in Missouri.  If passed, it would allow citizens access to stem cell research and the prospective cures that are permitted under federal law.  Interest groups would be unable to ban this access as they unsuccessfully attempted six years prior.

Stem cells have the potential to cure a wide variety of diseases such as MS, Parkinson’s, and certain cancers, of which 860,000 Missourians were affected in 2006.  Missouri’s state government spent $299 million that year to treat these diseases.  Finding new cures and therapies using stem cells might dramatically reduce these costs.  More importantly, stem cells offer the hope of new treatments for a large number of individuals unresponsive to current treatments.
